There are moments in menswear history when a particular style captures the imagination so completely that it seems strange it ever fell out of fashion, and I believe that’s the case for the continental tie.
Sharp, structured, and unlike anything else in formal dressing, the continental tie occupied a very particular place in the formalwear landscape of the 1950s and 60s.
Whether you're new to the style or already a fan, here's everything you need to know — including the story behind our own modern interpretation of it.
A continental tie (first picture above) — also widely known as a crossover bow tie — is a distinctive piece of formal neckwear. Rather than forming the symmetrical winged shape of a traditional bow tie, or hanging down the front of a shirt like a regular necktie, it crosses cleanly at the centre of the neck, creating a sleek horizontal band with a neat, intentional crossover at the front.
The "continental" name comes from the broader continental look that swept through European and American menswear in the mid-twentieth century: a movement defined by sharp tailoring, slim cuts, and accessories chosen with genuine intention. The continental tie was one of the period's most distinctive accessories.
It sits in a category of its own in formalwear. Not quite a bow tie, not a regular necktie — something altogether more individual. And that individuality is precisely what I love about it.
The continental tie came to prominence as part of a much broader cultural shift in menswear. The post-war years saw a generation of men who wanted to dress with more intention and more individuality than the generations before them. The continental look — with its fitted jackets, tapered trousers, and accessories chosen with care — was the perfect vehicle for that.
The continental tie fit right into that world. It offered something a standard bow tie couldn't: a sense of considered, slightly unconventional style that still read as entirely appropriate for formal occasions. It wasn't rebellious exactly, but it had an edge. And that edge is exactly what made it appealing then, and exactly what still makes it appealing now.
This is where our story comes in — and where we should be clear about something important.
The traditional continental tie (or crossover bow tie) typically has visible ends or tails that project outward from the crossover point at the centre front. It's a bold, expressive look that suits the style's mid-century roots perfectly.
Our Modern Continental Tie(picture below) takes that same fundamental idea — the crossover neckband, the horizontal structure, the confident formalwear attitude — and refines it for a contemporary sensibility.
The key difference is in the ends: on our version, they're significantly shorter. There are no projecting tails beyond the crossover point. The result is a cleaner, more compact silhouette that feels distinctly of-the-moment while still honouring the style it's inspired by.
Style icons like Tupac Shakur, have worn this modern crossover-style neckpiece as part of his distinctive formalwear aesthetic, and Karim Benzema has also been photographed in a similar design.
It's the same DNA, but with a sharper modern edit. The name Modern Continental Tie is our own — because we felt this interpretation deserved a name that captured both where it came from and where it's going.

If you love the idea of formal dressing but want to bring something a little more personal to the occasion, the Modern Continental Tie is genuinely compelling. The black Dupion silk, the precise fit, the structured crossover — it reads as thoroughly formal. But it carries a character and a quiet individuality that a standard bow tie doesn't necessarily always have.
This is an alternative to the bow tie for eveningwear, not a replacement for it. It suits the person who already feels at home in formal dress and wants to take it one considered step further.
It works particularly well with:
• A classic black dinner jacket
• A velvet smoking jacket or blazer
• A tuxedo shirt with a mandarin collar
• A formal shirt with a wing or pointed collar
The mandarin collar pairing is arguably its natural home. Where a traditional bow tie can look a little awkward against a mandarin collar, the Modern Continental Tie sits against it with complete ease and a great deal of style.
The good news is that both the classic continental tie and our modern version are straightforward to wear and style. Here are a few things worth knowing.
Getting the fit right- A proper continental tie — whether the classic style or a modern interpretation — should be made to fit your neck, not adjusted to approximately fit it. Our Modern Continental Tie is handmade to your exact shirt collar size, which gives it a clean, tailored look that an adjustable band simply can't replicate.
Collar choices - As above — mandarin, wing and pointed collars all work beautifully. Each gives a slightly different feel, from the sleek and modern (mandarin) to the more traditionally formal (wing).
Stud choices - Our Modern Continental Tie comes with your choice of a vintage gold or gloss black pop stud. A gold stud adds a touch of warmth and vintage glamour. A black stud keeps everything tonal and sharp. The choice depends on your outfit and preferences.
Occasions - Black tie dinners, formal weddings, evening events, performances, and parties are all fair game. Anywhere you'd wear a bow tie, the Modern Continental Tie can go.

Here at Blue Eyes Bow Ties, we've been hand-making bow ties and accessories in England since 2016 — always from natural fibres, always made with proper care, and always with an eye on pieces that stand genuinely apart from what might find on a high street rail or a mass-production website.
Our Modern Continental Tie in Black Dupion Silk is handmade to your exact collar size in black Dupion silk, with a neckband that gently tapers from 3cm at the back to 2cm at the front for a sculpted, precise fit. The short, neat ends at the crossover give it that distinctive modern profile — compact and controlled.
Choose your pop stud in vintage gold or gloss black, tell us your shirt collar size, and we'll make it to order.

A note on Dupion silk: This tie is made from black Dupion silk — a beautifully textured natural fabric with a subtly slubbed surface. Those characteristic bumps in the weave aren't imperfections; they're created by silkworms building their cocoons close together, and the more pronounced the slubs, the more natural and high quality the silk. If you notice the texture, you're noticing something to be pleased about!
Is a continental tie the same as a crossover bow tie?Yes — continental tie and crossover bow tie are two names for the same style of neckwear. Both describe the same crossover-front, horizontal-band design that became popular as part of the continental look in mid-century menswear.
How is the Modern Continental Tie different from a traditional continental tie? The traditional continental tie typically has visible ends that project outward from the crossover point. Our Modern Continental Tie has significantly shorter ends — no projecting tails — giving it a cleaner, more compact and contemporary silhouette. It's inspired by the original style but edited for a modern eye.
Is a continental tie appropriate for black tie occasions?Absolutely. The continental tie has genuine formalwear heritage, and our Modern Continental Tie is designed specifically for black tie and formal dressing. It's a confident, style-led choice rather than an unconventional one.
Does it work with different collar types? Yes — it works well with mandarin, wing and pointed collars. It's particularly well suited to mandarin collars, where a traditional bow tie would look out of place.
Is it difficult to put on? Not at all! The Modern Continental Tie fastens with a simple pop stud — no tying required.
The continental tie — in both its classic form and our own modern interpretation — is one of those rare formalwear pieces that manages to feel simultaneously rooted in history and entirely fresh. Whether you're drawn to the original crossover bow tie style or the cleaner, shorter lines of our Modern Continental Tie, you're choosing something with genuine character and real craftsmanship behind it. And in a world full of fashion mediocrity, that counts for rather a lot.
